The National Champions bust Negative Stereotypes about Poultry Meat Production.

Alel Agro JSC, a leader among Kazakhstan’s poultry meat production companies, proved that if you do everything in a right way, the product will be delicious, wholesome and affordable.

Immediate Growth Prospects

As a member of the National Champions Program, Alel Agro has already secured greatly its status of the largest poultry meat producer in Kazakhstan. The company’s annual capacity has already reached 34,000 tons; it is planned to increase the capacity at least by one third for the next three years.

According to Naim Turdiyev, Financial Director of Alel Agro JSC, “We intend to increase the capacity up to 45,000 tons of poultry meat minimum by 2018 and obtain 23 – 25% of total share of similar products made in Kazakhstan by domestic producers. However, this is only the start. The country annually consumes about three thousand tons of poultry meat. Our domestic producers can provide only a half of it, which fails to meet the consumer security standard of 80%. The rest is exported in a form of frozen chicken quarters from the USA, Russia and Belarus. Unfortunately, the exported poultry is of a poor quality due to water-injecting (water-filling) freezing technology used to deliberately increase the poultry meat weight. We do our best to solve such problems with import by increasing the output of domestic chilled meat, which is more wholesome, delicious and fresher than the frozen meat. Finally, it is a consumer who makes a choice. We don’t have much product in stock. We can say the wholesale buyers make a line to get our products. Moreover, they are not only local buyers. The products are partially exported.”

The National Champions

Alel Agro JSC associates its ambitious development plans for the next years with the participation in the National Champions Program implemented by Baiterek Holding.

For Reference

The goal of the National Champions Program is to create competitive export-oriented productions in the non-oil and gas sector of Kazakhstan by establishing regional and global companies. This Program was developed as a part of the National Champions Initiative of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev introduced at the extended meeting of the Government of the Republic of Kazakhstan on May 5, 2015.

In 2016, the company plans to obtain borrowed funds under the National Champions Program of Baiterek Holding in an amount of 1.9B KZT.

According to the Chairperson of the Management Board of Alel Agro JSC Raziya Zhatakpayeva, “We intend not only to expand the capacities of chilled poultry meat output, but also implement best sales practices. According to preliminary data, the participation in the National Champions Program will ensure 19% growth of Alel Agro’s revenues by 2018.”

Alel Agro currently has five poultry factories, a feed mill, a slaughterhouse, a sorting terminal, and an incubator located in Almaty Region. There is a parent stock with three hundred thousand pedigree individuals kept separately from all other facilities. New facilities are under construction. According to the company’s management, it will create about 250 additional jobs by 2018.

According to Serikbay Sadulov, Director of Avat Poultry Factory, “It can seem to be a small number, however, we should note that it is quite big for the countryside where most locals are engaged in agriculture. For example, there are about 100 people working at the factories of one village without additionally engaged people who somehow participate in meeting the factory needs. It is about 140 people. There are about fifteen hundred families living in the village nearby. That means we provide jobs for about 10% of local families, and we have five such poultry farms. This is a good figure.”

From an Egg to the Table

Several dozens of people should make a lot of efforts to bring a locally produced broiler to the table of an ordinary Kazakhstani. The broiler starts its way as an egg in a parent stock, then it is delivered to the incubator.

Alel Agro used the equipment manufactured in Italy, Holland, German, and other Western countries, because the company focuses on the European quality standards in production of the poultry meat.

According to the Chairperson of the Management Board of Alel Agro JSC Raziya Zhatakpayeva, “We could buy, for example, Russian equipment. Yes, it is cheaper, however, it does not meet our needs to the full. Therefore, we buy the equipment from Europe. We do our best to comply with the European standards in the production. This will help us to win better position in both the domestic market and further export.”

The use of the cutting-edge equipment and almost fully automated processes enables minimizing production losses. For instance, the European Production Efficiency Factor (EPEF) for broilers is 340, which meets the European production efficiency standards.
After sorting, the birds are delivered to the factories in special trucks. The factories are located at quite a long distance (several kilometers) from each other to ensure biosafety of the livestock. This is the place where forty-gram baby chickens transform into two-and-a-half-kilogram broilers for 42 days; these broilers are further delivered to the tables of the Kazakhstanis.

Although the word “transform” is not appropriate for this type of production. Dozens of extra-class specialists, many of whom got special education far back in the Soviet time and dedicated their lives to their labour of love and keep studying new solutions under modern conditions, ensure strict control of the feeding schedule, ventilation, and other sophisticated processes.

According to Tatyana Zhukova, Chief Veterinarian of Alel Agro JSC, “It is very important for us to comply with all routine procedures, standards and phases of production. Owing to this, we managed to bust the common stereotypes about chicken meat injection (filling with water), injection of growth hormones, improper thermal processing, poor poultry keeping at the factories. All our products have been declared to comply with the standards and requirements of the Customs Union, ISO, ECO, HALAL and Adal.”

Therefore, Alel Agro JSC is one of few Kazakh companies, which serves as a spectacular example of the National Champion. By using local Kazakh raw materials, implementing best international production practices, it promotes agriculture, provides jobs, and moreover, feeds the country.
